The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.

Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
