WHO Issues Concern Over Severe Lack of Weight-Loss Injections

Under a tenth of people that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy can access them, warns the WHO as it releases its first advice on the medications.

Considering over a billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is urging increased and just availability to these injectable treatments.

According to projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"The new guidelines recognises that obesity is a chronic disease that can be treated with thorough and lifelong treatment," said its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are major obstacles to broad availability to the injections that can help people shift substantial weight, says the body.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Even in the present most optimistic case, the production of GLP-1 therapies could only cover approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, per the WHO.

The advice calls on countries and companies to increase availability, by approaches including licensing agreements.

A patent on a key compound – the core ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Operate

The injections imitate a biological compound to slow digestion, reduce hunger and boost the sense of being full so individuals consume fewer calories.

People typically start to lose weight in the initial weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Evidence suggests users may regain a significant portion within a year of halting the medication, because their normal hunger resume.

Being carrying excess weight elevates your likelihood for developing medical conditions, like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and some malignancies.

Obesity concerns individuals in countries worldwide and was responsible for 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
